How many pages do you need for your website? A guide for mission-driven nonprofits, assistive tech firms and therapists.

In my September offer, I stated that potential clients needed to request a minimum of six pages and no more. And someone then asked me - why? I considered this for a while. I thought I'd already thought it through enough, but that doesn't mean that it's clear to anyone else. Let's examine it a bit more closely.

You need great web copy to guide your readers through your website without them getting bored and moving on...
A website needs to explain itself. That's whether you're a mission-driven nonprofit or an assistive tech firm looking for investment. The three most important of those are the Homepage, the About Page, and the Services Page (which, depending on how big you are, should have at least 1 subpage). Then there's your privacy policy page - important because you need to demonstrate good governance if you collect information from donors or volunteers. This shows you're taking privacy and data protection seriously.
How many pages does it take to make a website? This depends on what type of organization you are - Assistive tech, nonprofit, or a therapist.
So there are five pages, but what about research? Depending on the type of nonprofit, there are studies, reports, and white papers, medical research or statistics, educational materials and resources, and, if you're looking for funding, then research that reports on impact and need. Some of these pages will be above (as part of the menu for the homepage) or below the fold.
If we're looking at assistive tech firms, then yes there's the obligatory Homepage, About Page, Services/Products Page, Industries you Serve, Case Studies Page, Research and Resources Page, FAQs Page, Accessbility Statement and Privacy Policy (both of these could sit on the same page, unless you want to split the two and have your Privacy Policy Page below the fold). Additional pages could include a Demo Page and an Events Page.
The Homepage is the driving seat of your website, the door to your office, the centre of your online world. It should guide, navigate, and explain who you are and what you do.....
Therapists will again be looking at a Homepage, About Page (Practice), and Services Page, which could run into two or even more pages. A Processes Page which discusses the approach and methods, and what type of therapeutic models are used, along with a glossary of terms. A Resources Page, FAQs Page, and possibly an Insurance Page, along with rates, what's expected, including how and when you're due to be billed for your time, and how your clients pay you.

Your menu at the top of your website pages should be clear and minimal, not cluttered and all over the shop....
What I haven't mentioned are Contact and Blog Pages, which I don't charge for. So what I've found then is that most of the people I serve will need far more than just six pages of copy, so I'm changing my offer to reflect this. There's still a minimum of six pages (because any less for the industries I serve will mean squeezing an awful lot into each page), and no limit on the number of pages as long as we're not creating pages for the sake of it. Each one should serve a purpose. On average, in the main, small businesses are usually happy with between 5 to 10, larger, medium-sized organizations can be higher than 20. I'd say that 10 to 15 should be the max, but it largely depends on how large an organisation you are.
So the offer is still on, but it's changed...just a bit...
So the offer then is changed, and it's only available until September 13th. It's a perfect opportunity to take advantage of it, so you're all ready for Q4. You can have a whole new set of copy pages or a refresh of what's currently there, in keeping with any changes your organization has undergone.
