What can we look forward to in July and August?

Many of you will be jetting off on a well-earned holiday to far-flung places, while some of you (much like me) will remain in the UK.

For those of you into your sci-fi, you will have enjoyed celebrating World UFO Day back on the 2nd of July, and in the same month we've seen the World Cup, and its concluding match, with Spain winning the prestigious award in this past week. We had Independence Day on the 4th (in the US), and from July 23rd to August 2nd we have the Commonwealth Games, this time held in Glasgow. This is a multi-sport event much like the Olympics, but as the title of the competition suggests, only those countries in the Commonwealth can compete.

What do we have to look forward to in August then?

Well, there's no big Glastonbury festival this year, as many will have discovered back in June, but it'll be back in 2027. In the meantime, the illustrious Edinburgh Festival Fringe starts August 7th and continues until the 31st. It's on my bucket list of places to see, and as usual it'll be everything from dance and comedy to theatre.

On the last weekend of the August Bank Holiday is the Notting Hill Carnival, a street festival with Caribbean food, parades and food through the streets of London. And if you're not into that or if you're simply nowhere near London, you could celebrate International Cat Day, which is August 8th. And what's not to celebrate when it comes to cats?
